Yankees hmm
Via Mark Feinsand: The Yankees have interest in free agent-to-be outfielder Torii Hunter. The Angels are unlikely to make him a qualifying offer, meaning it would not cost a draft pick to sign him.
Hunter, 37, hit .313/.365/.451 with 16 homers with the Halos this offseason, though his .389 BABIP was wildly out of whack compared to the rest of his career (.307). He’s been a consistently above-average hitter throughout his career though, plus he offers solid defense in right field. The Yankees love strong character as well, and Hunter is widely considered to be one of the best guys in the game. He’s a fit and someone we will hear an awful lot about in the coming weeks.

Kroger Faces Employee Discrimination Class Action Lawsuit
Plano, TX: A former employee of Cincinnati-based grocery chain The Kroger Co, has filed a discrimination and harassment lawsuit in federal court based on claims Kroger fired him because of his mental and physical disabilities, and despite his multiple commendations and a successful work history.Plano resident Karl Tipple, 24, filed the suit on September 5 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in Plano, case number 4:12-CV-00573, after receiving Right to Sue Letters from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Texas Workforce Commission.
The lawsuit alleges that the manager of Kroger Store 581, located in the 2900 block of Custer Road in Plano, repeatedly harassed Mr. Tipple for more than a year, including referring to Mr. Tipple on numerous occasions as a "f------ retarded idiot" who was "too stupid to live."
Mr. Tipple, who began working at another Kroger location more than six years ago, suffers from an attention-deficit disorder and partial deafness, and has an IQ that allows him to read and write on a third-grade level. He was transferred to Kroger's Custer Road location in November 2010 as an Assistant Bakery Manager, but was quickly demoted to a checker and bagger position and was forced to file multiple grievances to gain full-time employment from his supervisors.
According to the lawsuit, the store manager frequently yelled at Mr. Tipple on the sales floor, forced him to work alone on certain tasks, brought unsubstantiated allegations against him from other employees, and ultimately filed a false customer complaint that was later withdrawn. In addition, the manager confiscated Mr. Tipple's personal cell phone, apparently believing that the phone was being used to document violations of corporate and union policies by the manager and other employees. Until his firing in December 2011, Mr. Tipple served as the youngest elected Steward of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Kroger's history.
The plaintiff is represented by the Kendall Law Group.

Yankees Update
According to the transactions page on the official site, Casey McGehee has elected free agency. I guess the team outrighted him off the 40-man roster at some point and he refused the minor league assignment. The 30-year-old infielder was acquired from the Pirates at the trade deadline and hit .151/.220/.264 in just 59 plate appearances with the Yankees. He was buried behind Steve Pearce for a while and was left off both the ALDS and ALCS rosters. McGehee was a prime non-tender candidate and this gets him off the roster a little sooner.
In other news, the Yankees have returned Rule 5 Draft pick Brad Meyers to the Nationals. The 27-year-old right-hander didn’t pitch at all this year after hurting his shoulder during an offseason workout. Left-hander Cesar Cabral, the team’s other Rule 5 Draft pick, is still on the roster. He’s a special case as a two-time Rule 5 guy and could be retained long-term. The 23-year-old pitched well in Spring Training and might have beaten Clay Rapada out for the second lefty reliever’s job had he not fractured his elbow near the end of camp. The Yankees currently have 12 open spots on their 40-man roster, but both Cabral and Michael Pineda still need to be activated off the 60-day. So it’s really ten open spots.

Over at MLBTR, Matt Swartz published his projected salaries for this winter’s arbitration-eligible players. His model was accurate to within 10% for players who did not sign multi-year deals last year — including just a 5% error for the Yankees — and after a summer of tweaks and refinements, he could be even closer this year.
The Yankees have seven arbitration-eligible players to deal with this offseason — Chris Dickerson and Frankie Cervelli fell just short of qualifying — though Casey McGehee is a prime non-tender candidate. The biggest expected raise belongs to Phil Hughes, who should see his salary jump from $3.2M to $5.7M. David Robertson and Boone Logan figure to get ~$1M raises while Brett Gardner and Joba Chamberlain are in line for negligible pay increases following their injury-shortened years. Jayson Nix still projects to get a six-figure salary and could be non-tendered as well. Without McGehee, the six-man arbitration class will cost the Yankees approximately $16.7M. Not too bad at all.
Yankees two
Via Buster Olney: The Dodgers are open to the idea of trading Andre Ethier this offseason. They’re probably looking to create some roster and payroll flexibility moving forward after that blockbuster deal with the Red Sox.
Ethier, 30, would make a lot of sense for the Yankees and their right field opening had he not just signed a five-year, $85M extension this summer. Add in the fact that he can’t hit lefties and is good for one or two DL trips per year, and I don’t see much of a fit here unless Los Angeles eats a significant chunk of the salary. Rather than trade for Ethier and absorb his contract, the Yankees could just re-sign Nick Swisher — the superior player both offensively and defensively — for (likely) less money and plug the outfield hole that way.
Yankees
Via Nick Cafardo: Hiroki Kuroda is “content” with signing another one-year contract this offseason. The right-hander wants to retain some flexibility in case he decides to return to Japan down the road.
Kuroda, 38, pitched to a 3.32 ERA (3.86 FIP) in a career-high 219.2 innings this season after signing a one-year, $10M contract last offseason. I’m sure the Yankees would welcome him back on another one-year deal in a heartbeat even if requires an extra couple of million bucks. They figure to make him a qualifying offer by Friday’s deadline just in case he decides to return to the Dodgers or sign elsewhere.

Yankees Upload players to free agency
A total of 137 players around the league officially hit free agency today, including a dozen Yankees: Eric Chavez, Pedro Feliciano, Freddy Garcia, Raul Ibanez, Andruw Jones, Hiroki Kuroda, Derek Lowe, Russell Martin, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Ichiro Suzuki, and Nick Swisher. Rafael Soriano can join them if he opts out of his contract by Wednesday’s deadline, which seems likely. Feliciano’s inclusion in the list of free agents is an indication that the Yankees have already declined his $4.5M club option. That is not surprising at all after the left-hander threw zero meaningful pitches during his time in pinstripes.
Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, players don’t even have to file for free agency anymore. They just hit the open market. I never understood the point of that anyway. Players are free to sign with new teams starting Saturday.
