Microsoft reportedly mulling bid for Yahoo
Microsoft reportedly mulling bid for Yahoo
really how would u feel about that bc hotmail sucks
Microsoft is considering a second run at Yahoo.
Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reported today that Microsoft is weighing a potential bid for Yahoo, and may enlist a partner to help close the deal.
But a bid may not materialize as there are still different factions within Microsoft that disagree on whether the company should acquire Yahoo, Reuters reported.
Microsoft joins a number of companies that are eying Yahoo, which said in an internal memo that it is fielding inquiries from multiple parties, a tacit acknowledgement that it was open to sell.

The potential acquirers range from Chinese Internet company Alibaba to a number of private equity firms such as Silverlake Partners and venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz.
This would be a renewed attempt by Microsoft, which in February 2008 made an offer to Yahoo, only to be rebuffed by management and founder Jerry Yang in a protracted corporate soap opera. By July 2009, the two companies made nice in a lesser deal that put Yahoo search in Microsoft's hands.
Microsoft has shown a recent willingness to spend big on acquisitions, including its $8.5 billion purchase of Skype in May and the $6 billion takeover of advertising software provider Aquantive in 2007.
In September, Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL said they would be joining forces in a combined ad sales effort.

lion king in 3-d movie
Disney plans 3D party in theaters and on Blu-ray
Disney is doubling down on 3D with a mix of big-screen 3D rereleases and a big "Toy Story" rollout on Blu-ray 3D.
While analysts across the board are wondering if the general public wants movies in 3D at home or at the multiplex, a chorus of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" resounded from Burbank as Disney dominated the box office the last couple of weeks with the 3D theater release of "The Lion King."
So, forever an entity eager to make hay while the cartoon sun shines, Disney has announced more 3D rereleases of animated classics. The limited theatrical engagements will include "Beauty and the Beast" on January 13, 2012; Pixar's "Finding Nemo" on September 14, 2012; Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." on January 18, 2013; and "The Little Mermaid" on September 13, 2013.
On the home front, the "Toy Story" trilogy will hit on Blu-ray 3D on November 1.

Big day for film fans: Netflix earnings on Oct. 24
That's when Netflix reports third-quarter earnings and when we should learn more about how many Netflix subscribers were alienated by recent and controversial changes to the service.
Rivals, investors and customers will be watching closely to see how many subscribers the company possesses for the quarter ending September 30. Not only can we compare the subscriber number to the same period last year, but we can also stand them up to Netflix's July projections as well as revised estimates given last month.
When Netflix reported second-quarter earnings, the company predicted it would come out of the third quarter with 25 million total U.S. subscribers. But that was shortly after the company announced it was splitting up a popular hybrid subscription plan that offered access to video streamed over the Web as well as DVD-by-mail for $10 per month. The company would ask hybrid users to start paying $8 a month each for discs and streaming.
Many fans of the hybrid plan were angered by the price hike.
Then, on Sept. 14, Netflix leaders, who acknowledged underestimating customer reaction to the rate increase, announced that they had lowered subscriber estimates and said it expected to end the third quarter with 24 million, a 4 percent shortfall. Then came a whopper. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the company would split itself into two services. Netflix would oversee streaming video operations, while a new service called Qwikster, would take over DVD-by-mail.

Once again, subscribers took to the Web to rant and rage. Analysts bashed the idea and the name of the new company (one said it sounded like a vacuum cleaner instead of a video service). Investors did the most damage, sending Netflix shares into steep decline.
Shares topped $300 in mid July but in morning trading today, the stock was down to $114.
Here's what Netflix has going for it: the company officially killed the old hybrid plan last month. This means many people may not have noticed higher charges on their bank statements yet or weighed the decision to keep the service or not. Some researchers say they've seen signs subscriber cancellations begin to slow.
Perhaps more importantly, Netflix managers are a group accustomed to having its back against the wall. A decade ago, nearly every one on Wall Street thought Blockbuster would crush the Internet upstart. Doubters said Netflix's mail-order rental business was a gimmick. Once again, four years ago when Netflix began pushing hard into distributing movies over the Internet, the naysayers said adoption would be slow because Web-connection speeds were too slow and there was no way to watch Internet movies on a TV set.
Netflix quickly overcame all those adversities. Maybe the question, how fast can it work its way back from this?

iPod Nano watch gets facelift
iPod Nano watch gets facelift
Apple has created a series of new clock faces for people who wear their iPod Nanos as watches.
The mini music player can double as a watch thanks to special bands designed by iWatchZ, Lunatik, and other vendors. iWatchZ offers a variety of iPod Nano watch bands ranging in price from $25 to $90, while Lunatik's bands run from $40 to $100.

To kick off the 2011 iPod Nano revealed at yesterday's launch event, Apple is offering 16 new faces for a total of 18 choices for watch wearers. The lineup of new faces varies from Kermit the Frog to Mickey Mouse to traditional analog to more modern digital styles. The new watch faces are included with the new iPod Nanos so owners can change from one to another depending on their mood.
The 2011 Nano also comes with a new fitness center that can track your workout. The device's built-in accelerometer offers feedback on your exercise regimen. Tapping into the Nike+ program, you can hook up the Nano to your PC and upload your results to the Nike+ Web site to set up your training program and keep track of your
progress. Those of you working out at the gym can also connect the Nano to a Nike + iPod-compatible machine.
Beyond the software enhancements, the 2011 iPod Nano is physically the same as last year's model. But Apple has trimmed the prices, selling the 8GB version for $129 (down from $149 last year) and the 16GB model for $149 (down from $179 last year).

Microsoft to bring cable programming to Xbox
Microsoft's long-rumored plans to bring cable television content to its Xbox video game console will become reality over the holidays.
The software giant announced this morning that nearly 40 television content providers--including Comcast, Verizon, and HBO in the United States--will roll out programming over Xbox Live. The company also has deals lined up with providers in the U.K., Spain, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Italy.
"Today's announcement is a major step toward realizing our vision to bring you all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy," Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, said in a statement.

Microsoft first discussed the possibility of bringing cable programming to the Xbox at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles in June. At the time, the company said it was working on deals to allow customers to use the console to watch movies and television shows, in addition to playing games.
That's always been the promise of Xbox, since Microsoft first moved into the video game console business a decade ago. Gaming was always at the heart of the console. But the company's vision for the Xbox was to be a strategic beachhead for its software in the living room. Letting consumers find programming further solidifies that spot.
The new programming announced today won't be free. Customers need also to be subscribers to HBO, for example, to be able to view its HBO GO programming.
"Our ongoing goal is to deliver HBO's acclaimed programming to our subscribers wherever and whenever they want it, and this relationship with Microsoft is another huge step in accomplishing just that," said Bernadette Aulestia, senior vice president of Domestic Network Distribution & Marketing at HBO.
