ASUS reveals ‘Next Transformation’ as the Transformer AiO, a dual-booting Windows 8 / Android 4.0 desktop PC

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:29 AM PDT
Last week when ASUS teased us with their Next Transformation we kind of knew that it was a dual-booting Windows 8 / Android device. Earlier they announced their partnership with BlueStacks, and I was hopeful that wasn’t the tease. Thankfully it wasn’t as they just revealed the Transformer AiO at Computex.
It’s an all-in-one desktop PC that features an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, a discrete graphics card, and an 18.4-inch multitouch display for Microsoft Windows 8. Nothing extraordinary there, but here’s where things get interesting. If you lift the screen out of its base, it becomes a behemoth tablet. Okay what else? While in tablet mode you will be able to switch to Android 4.0. It can also be used as a Windows 8 device in tablet mode by communicating with the dock by some sort of remote desktop.
As of right now, we don’t know much more as far as any other specs or pricing. I’m sure it won’t be cheap though. The folks over at The Verge are at Computex and they grabbed a quick hands on. Hit the break to check it out.

NVIDIA Gives More Details Of Its Upcoming KAI For Budget-Friendly Tablets

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 12:00 PM PDT
It’s no secret that NVIDIA (and Android fanatics in general) are eager and excited about its upcoming KAI platform for tablets. We saw as recently as a few weeks ago how NVIDIA envisioned bringing premium quality to tablets for modest and reasonable prices, yet NVIDIA was rather vague and general about the concept and its intentions for Android consumers. That’s why it took the time to expand on the basic premise of what KAI is and why it will be important for any and all Android users. To begin, NVIDIA makes it completely clear that it’s not easy to bring a budget tablet device to the marketplace:
“The truth is, it’s incredibly difficult to manufacture a low-cost tablet at all, even with a compromised experience – one marked by poor performance, previous-gen display capabilities, mediocre battery life, discouraging touchscreen responsiveness, lack of apps, and low-quality build. Building one that’s satisfying and profitable is a whole other matter”.
That very reason is the basis of the KAI platform. NVIDIA got to thinking and wondered if it’s possible to bring its high-performing Tegra 3 chip, while keeping costs as low as possible for tablet devices. Well NVIDIA researchers found a way to bring its Tegra 3 technology for budget friendly tablets. In essence, the Tegra 3 is the ”blueprint providing the basis for future low-cost tablets with a premium experience that consumers will be able to buy” for KAI-based budget tablets. That means that eventually, users will be able to use the Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor (and its 4-PLUS-1 architecture and battery-saver core) in a variety of options and configurations such as NVIDIA’s own reference unit— which is a modest 7-inch tablet. NVIDIA also confirms that KAI technology will be found in many resolutions and sizes of Android tablets.
NVIDIA doesn’t have much more for the Android community for now, but urges everyone to “stay tuned” to see what it and partner manufacturers are cooking up their sleeves. Looks like it will soon be time to finally splurge on a budget-friendly tablet device, right?

More Details On Microsoft’s SmartGlass, Still Strongly Aims To Be The Ultimate Media Hub In The Living Room

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 02:22 PM PDT
Why in the heck are we reporting news on Microsoft?  Good question.  As we briefly touched upon a couple of days ago, in an attempt to integrate seamlessly several media outlets through the medium of one device, your Xbox 360, Microsoft has brought to the table “SmartGlass”.  What is SmartGlass?  It’s quite a few services, features and benefits rolled up into one package.  For starters, it can be considered an application.  An app that allows your phone and tablet to be transformed into another screen, an extension if you will, for your television as well as a game controller and Internet access tool.  The feature will work with iOS, Android and of course, Windows, giving great flexibility and squashing for the most the necessity to go out and purchase a new device for compatibility.  Using your 360 console, your tablet, phone and even PC becomes a multi-screen companion for your convenience and at your fingertips.  For example, the company demo’d Game of Throneson the TV via the Xbox, a SmartGlass enabled tab was showing a map of Westeros and other pertinent info related to the show.  In addition, the content itself can either be pushed from the PC, phone or tab to the Xbox or from the Xbox to the TV set.  SmartGlass seamlessly integrates all devices to work together to enhance the media experience.  Furthermore, in addition to these avenues , gaming was taken to another level as the company demo’d how the user could use the tab as a playbook while playing Madden on the 360 console.  The company is also reportedly adding Internet Explorer to the Xbox and will allow you to use your Android smartphone as a mouse.  Yes, a mouse I said.  This will allow you to surf the mighty web on the big screen using the smartphone as a mouse to navigate.  As most who follow Microsoft know, it’s no hidden agenda that the company aims to make their Xbox 360 the center hub to control all of your media, thus transforming your living room experience with their product at the helm.  It will be the hub that powers all, so to speak.  Only time will tell how the product ultimately pans out and whether or not Android devices will integrate into the mix with little effort.  Stay tuned and as we find out.  Feel free to offer your thoughts in the comments section below.

That awkward

THAT AWKWARD MOMENT That awkward moment when you go to the doctor and the doctor asks you if you are sexually active in front of your mom ~~ That awkward moment when a GPS tells a gay person to go straight ~~ That awkward moment when you don't know whether to give up your seat because you can't tell whether the woman is pregnant or just chubby ~~ that awkward moment when your father asks you if you're being safe ~~ that awkward moment when you taking a shit in a public restroom and someone walks in on you during the middle of your final push ~~ the awkward moment when an ugly girl asks you if she's ugly ~~ the awkward moment when you congratulate a fat lady for being pregnant ~~ the awkward moment when you're yelling at someone but fuck up the words ~~ that awkward moment when someone asks you what's wrong and they are the problem ~~ 30 LIKES FOR MORE!!

world

PROOF THAT THE WORLD IS NUTS!! In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death. (Like THAT makes sense.) In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror. (Do they look different reversed?) Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers. The sex organs of the deceased must be covered with a brick or piece of wood at all times. (A brick??) The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation. (Much worse than "going blind!") There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time... Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry. (Let's just think for a minute; is there any job anywhere else in the world that even comes close to this?) In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands. The husband's lover, on the other hand, may be killed in any manner desired. (Ah! Justice!) Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England - but only in tropical fish stores. (But of course!) In Cali, Colombia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first time this happens, her mother must be in the room to witness the act. (Makes one shudder at the thought.) In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, it is illegal for a man to have sex with a woman and her daughter at the same time. (I presume this was a big enough problem that they had to pass this law?) In Maryland, it is illegal to sell condoms from vending machines with one exception: Prophylactics may be dispensed from a vending machine only "in places where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises." (Is this a great country or what? Not as great as Guam!) Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Who volunteers for this stuff?) Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (Is that why Flipper was always smiling?) The ant can lift 50 times its own weight, can pull 30 times its own weight and always falls over on its right side when intoxicated. (From drinking little bottles of...?) (Did the govt. pay for this research??) Butterflies taste with their feet. (Ah, geez.) An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.) Starfish don't have brains. (I know some people like that, too.) And, the best for last..... Turtles can breathe through their butts. (Do you think they have bad breath?) Sent from Funny Jokes http://bit.ly/1DOFTl

MADFINGER Games announces Dead Trigger, A zombie-themed first person shooter [Video]

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:42 PM PDT
MADFINGER Games, makers of the very popular Shadowgun, just announced their upcoming title called Dead Trigger. It’s a first person shooter and zombies are involved so we’re already excited. The storyline is that the world has collapsed due to a strange infection that turns regular people into zombies. You guessed it, you need to take the zombies down with your collection of weapons.
Dead Trigger will be compatible with many devices, but they will release a NVIDIA Tegra 3 version which promises to be console quality. It also supports game controllers so you can connect your device via HDMI to your big screen and play it like it was an Xbox 360 or a PS3. MADFINGER games was able to maximize what the Tegra 3 offers by adding ragdoll physics, volumetric fog, specular lighting, and enhanced fluid and water. You won’t find anything like this in the standard version.

It’s now time to see for yourself. Checkout the video below and you will quickly see how powerful NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 is.

MADFINGER Games Announces New Title For Mobile Devices DEAD TRIGGER

Powered by Unity and optimized for NVIDIA Tegra 3 mobile devices, DEAD TRIGGER showcases stunning graphics and immersive gameplay
Brno, Czech Republic – 1st June, 2012 – MADFINGER Games, creators of the blockbuster thirdperson shooter SHADOWGUN, today announced the beginning of a new game, DEAD TRIGGER – an action-packed first person zombie shooter. With DEAD TRIGGER, MADFINGER Games continues producing games with outstanding next-generation graphics and user-friendly gameplay on mobile devices.
MADFINGER Games remains faithful to mobile platforms – including smartphones and tablets – and has again created an amazing handheld experience, optimized for superb performance. Just as they did with SHADOWGUN, DEAD TRIGGER is offering gamers the same quality expected from console gaming systems. Optimized for the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor with its 4-PLUS-1 quad-core CPU architecture, MADFINGER Games was able to add ragdoll physics, volumetric fog, normal maps, specular lighting and realistic water; further enhancing the experience.
The main story of DEAD TRIGGER is set in the present – the year 2012 – but the world has collapsed and modern civilization is coming to its end. Billions of people have died from a strange infection and those who remain have turned into abominable beasts. There are just a few humans on the planet who survive, at least until they run out of ammo or figure out how to stop the beasts.
Authored with the Unity development platform, DEAD TRIGGER provides intuitive controls and stunning graphics with advanced lighting and post-process effects. The new MADFINGER Games title aspires to become one of the best looking and most entertaining zombie shooters on the market, combining graphically astonishing environments with intense first person action and a gradually revealing storyline.
DEAD TRIGGER is going to be released at the end of June 2012 on both Android and iOS and it will be featured on the NVIDIA TegraZone app – NVIDIA’s free app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor – and available on Google Play, as well as AppStore.
“We are very proud to announce our very first First-Person Shooter on mobile devices. By using new technologies to raise visual quality again, DEAD TRIGGER represents a further step in our production. We enhanced the visual experience by using motion captured animation, improved creation of characters or new shaders effects. But it‘s not only an issue of graphics, we are working very hard on gameplay mechanics as well,” said Marek Rabas, CEO of MADFINGER Games.
“MADFINGER Games has been a great partner of ours with their extraordinary ability to deliver high quality, console-quality gaming experiences for mobile devices,” said Ashu Rege, Vice President, Game Content & Technology at NVIDIA. “DEAD TRIGGER promises to be a visually stunning game and the graphical enhancements they are making, made possible by the Tegra 3 mobile processor, will heighten the experience for gamers on their Tegra 3 powered devices at launch.”
“DEAD TRIGGER pushes the boundaries of what developers have achieved with Unity on mobile and tablet devices”, said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies, “What the team at Madfinger has achieved is wonderful, and demonstrates what you can create with our amazing cross-platform engine.

AT&T CEO Says Data-Only Plans Are “Inevitable” Within The Next Two Years

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 10:51 PM PDT
AT&T‘s CEO Randall Stephenson said at an investor conference in New York this week that he’d “be surprised if, in the next 24 months, we don’t see people in the market place with data-only plans. I just think that’s inevitable.” Of course, he wasn’t necessarily saying AT&T would offer data-only plans in two years, but merely stating that someone most likely will.
A data-only plan would consider phone calls and texts as just another form of data. Smartphone usage trends on AT&T (and probably other carriers) indicate people are using fewer minutes each month. This makes sense with messaging and social networking apps doing a lot of the communication heavy lifting for many folks these days. Even voice calls can be made without using your carrier’s minutes.
Now let’s hope they increase the throttling thresholds, or do away with data speed caps all together before launching a data-only plan.

Microsoft Smart Glass: A Cross-Platform App That Pushes Media To Xbox 360

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 12:35 AM PDT
Microsoft is set to demo Smart Glass, an app that is akin to AirPlay for the Xbox 360, at E3 next week. This Xbox companion app is said to be able to play videos from different sources on tablets and phones as well as push that content from your device to an Xbox 360. What’s more, the app is apparently going to be made available for Windows, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android. This multiplatform strategy is smart for Microsoft since so many people have Xboxes regardless of which side they take in the mobile OS wars.
A leak of a confidential presentation for Smart Glass noted the following:
  • Will allow users to control their Xbox 360 remotely. Will be available cross platform on multiple operating systems including Windows, Windows Phone, Android and iOS.
  • Applications will be accessible through the tablet. Such as Youtube/Netflix/Vemo ect.
  • Live streaming ability through the tablet to the TV, desktop, lap top and other devices.
  • A demo at E3 will be shown, but no live video will be featured
As the owner of two Xbox 360′s, this is certainly something I am going to keep an eye on. More details should emerge at E3.

Verizon’s Viewdini video streaming application available now

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 04:03 AM PDT
We’re fast approaching a time where physical storage for your favourite movie or latest album will be a distant memory, cassettes and records have already been confined to the museums and CD’s and DVD’s are sure to follow before long . My 3 year old daughter already thinks it’s absurd to have to dig a DVD out of the collection and load into the player as opposed to simply clicking a button and waiting for your content to play.
The challenge we have now is that a lot of the video providers each have exclusive content. You can’t quite remember whether season 3 of Breaking Bad was on Netflix or Hulu and you find yourself launching them all until you find where it is. Thankfully it looks like Verizon has recognised this problem and is offering up a solution.

Viewdini by Verizon aims to be one-stop shop for 4G LTE customers that searches through the libraries of popular streaming services such as Netflix, Comcast XFINITY, Hulu Plus, mSpot etc. The service will find your content and bring up information such as reviews, availability, where you can watch and whether or not it will cost you to do so.  The app doesn’t stream the content directly, it simply directs you to the service that holds the content.
It may be just a touch ironic that Verizon has launched a service that essentially makes it easier to engage in one of the most data-hungry activities possible right around the time they’re in the news for bandwidth capcomplaints. All that aside, this is a handy little app that’s sure to make your life a little easier and that’s always a good thing, click the link below to grab it right away!

Rumour: Microsoft Office set to land on Android November 10th

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 04:22 AM PDT
Little more than a week ago we brought the news that strong rumours were surfacing suggesting a November launch for Microsoft Office for Android. The rumour mill just keeps on churning and further information has come to light today suggesting that November 10th will be the exact date. Tech news site The Daily received a tip off that Microsoft finished work on the app last month and are now engaged in testing across multiple platforms.
With Google Drive recently swallowing up Google Docs, it will be interesting to see what kind of impact the arrival of MS Office will have on Google’s own productivity suite. Keep tuned in to TalkAndroid and we’ll keep you updated as the story develops further.

Carmageddon is Android bound

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 04:45 AM PDT
When it first arrived on the scene back in 1997, Carmageddon was easily the most controversial game of the decade and perhaps the first game to bring video game violence concerns to the public domain. To put it into context for our younger readers, the press reaction for the original Grand Theft Auto was mild in comparison to the outrage caused when Carmageddon was released. The game was actually banned from sale in a number of countries in Europe (the UK being the most high profile) and had to be reworked replacing humans and blood with zombies and green goo. Only after the changes was the game approved for release.
Inspired by the Deathrace 2000 movie, the game throws the gamer into a high velocity, extremely violent race through the city where there are no holds barred. The Android version is a direct port of the original PC version with enhanced high-resolution graphics and refined touch screen controls. Oh and if you were wondering, the Android version will arrive complete with blood and gore. The game will launch for free for a limited time so there’s no excuse not to check out the game that inspired the GTA series. Check out the video below to see what all the fuss was about.

5 bodies found in burned-out SUV in Arizona desert

Pinal County Arizona Sherif depatment reports that five bodies were found in a burned out SUV.

(CNN) -- Five bodies were found Saturday in a burned-out vehicle in the southern Arizona desert, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said.
Border Patrol officers originally spotted the white Ford Excursion around 4:30 a.m. off the side of Interstate 8 in western Pinal County, about 60 miles south of Phoenix. When the agent turned around, the SUV "fled at high rates of speed," Babeu told CNN.
Aided by daylight, authorities spotted "numerous tracks off the road" and followed them for two to three miles before coming across a smoldering vehicle.
"That's when the Border Patrol agents went up to the vehicle with fire extinguishers and realized there were bodies inside, clearly deceased," the sheriff said.
None of the five killed was in the SUV's front seat. One was in the second row and the other four bodies were found "laying down flat in the cargo area," Babeu said.
A cause of death for the victims, who have not been identified, is not yet known.
The charred vehicle was the same make and model as the one spotted by the Border Patrol agent hours earlier.
Authorities are investigating whether the bodies found are linked to violence by Mexican drug cartels. The incident took place in the Vekol Valley, a hotbed of drug- and human-smuggling activity, according to Babeu, who said his department conducted 350 high-speed chases in the area last year in an effort to curb such crime.
"It looks like it's a cartel hit, where they exact revenge on people," the sheriff said, calling a drug connection "very likely" while noting there's been no definitive conclusion yet. "It happens all the time in Mexico; our fear and concern is that this violence is spilling over deep into the heart of Arizona."

Ice Cream Sandwich now on 7.1 percent of all Android smartphones

Over the past little while we've started to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich make its way to quite a few devices and now Google has updated their latest Android platform version statistics to give us all a better look at the rate of adoption across the board. Gingerbread is still the run away leader here with a total of 65 percent but Ice Cream Sandwich has now reached 7.1 percent of Android smartphones out there. For some perspective, that's up from the 2.9 percent reported in April.

Android Central
It's been another busy week for international Android news. The week's biggest story was undoubtedly the EuropeanGalaxy S III launch -- Samsung's latest flagship is now available on hundreds of carriers across the continent. (In "marble white" for now, as the "pebble blue" variant faces delays of 2-3 weeks.) As for the Galaxy S III in the U.S., the latest rumors suggest a possible June 20 launch, but that's yet to be confirmed.
We also got another European first this week -- the arrival of the Orange San Diego, Europe's first Intel-powered smartphone. And our own Richard Devine was on hand to give us his first impressions.
Other notable developments included HTC's launch of the Desire C on Three UK, and the arrival of long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Sony Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo, as well as HTC's Sensation XL.
And earlier on in the week, we reviewed the Sony Xperia U, an interesting little mid-range device from the Japanese manufacturer. Right now we're in the process of bringing you our definitive Galaxy S III review, so keep watching in the days ahead. In the meantime, we've got your full international round-up below...

Android's SiriusXM app (yes, some of us love and use satellite radio over streaming services) just got itself a fairly decent update in the Google Play store. On tap are "enhancements and fixes to the following core features:"
  • Start Now - Go back in time up to 5 hours to hear previously aired programming on most channels
  • TuneStart - Hear songs from the beginning when tuning to music channels
  • Pause - Pause and resume live programming
  • Fast Forward & Rewind - Skip forward and back on many channels
  • Show Alerts - Reminders when your favorite shows begin
  • Album Art & Artist Bios
  • Improved reliability & sound quality
A decent update indeed. We've got a download link after the break should you need it.

Digital Embers Live Wallpaper [Live Wallpaper Review]

Digital Embers Live Wallpaper

I've got to admit, ever since Google unveiled Honeycomb, with its TRON-like interface and emphasis on hexagons, I was hooked on that style. Something about digital honeycombs looked so cool to me, and as a result, I absolutely fell in love with the Digital Hive Live Wallpaper. D'Keesto has been keeping up in the wallpaper space, bringing us another entry in his "digital" line of live wallpapers, this time in the form of Digital Embers.
Digital Embers doesn't act like typical embers (bouncing around erratically and whatnot), but instead travels across the screen, usually left to right (or vice versa), igniting larger shapes from which the smaller embers radiate off of until the fade into nothingness. It's visually appealing as all getout (especially if you're easily entertained like yours truly), and if you touch anywhere on the screen, that area lights up with activity.
Hop into the settings menu and you'll see the wide variety of things you can tweak to really perfect your embery experience. There's options for your tile shape, spark shape, number of sparks, and spark color mode. You can also pick your colors here, using either single colors, colors based on battery level, or colors based off of the charging/discharging state of your device.
You can also alter how much the screen lights up when you touch a specific area and also give the wallpaper leeway to simulate screen touches (even if you're not), just to keep things interesting.
Overall, Digital Embers Live Wallpaper is great, as I'd expect from D'Keesto. It runs incredibly well, to the point that I'm not seeing any performance issues when swiping back and forth between screens on my old, archaic Tegra-2 tablet. (The horror!) If you're the type to venture into live wallpaper space and like what you see, I'd definitely suggest giving Digital Embers a shot.
Digital Embers Live Wallpaper is 99 cents in the Google Play Store. We've got screenshots, video, and download links after the break.
