E3 2012: Five unanswered questions about Wii U

Nintendo shows off a huge number of Wii U games, but still leaves us in the dark on some basic details.

LOS ANGELES--Nintendo showed off nearly two dozen games for the Wii U at its E3 2012 press conference. That's a deep software bench, but with all the emphasis on games, many important questions about the Wii U hardware and user experience have been left unanswered.

How will streaming media work? Nintendo says Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, and other video sources will be available, but there were no further details. Is Nintendo going to have its own video store? Unlikely, but will there be any significant exclusive video content that other consoles don't have? How about live TV, the new holy grail of consoles?

How will two-tablet gameplay work? Even though it was not confirmed until today, everyone knew the Wii U would have to eventually support dual GamePad tablets. But, the company says only single-tablet gameplay is ready to show at E3. This adds to the mix of different ways you can play, combining GamePads, the Xbox-like Wii U controller, and Wii wands.

Numbers don't always tell the story.

The Yankees went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on Sunday and that makes it sound like it was an unproductive afternoon. To the contrary, it was a successful one as Phil Hughes delivered the team’s first complete game of 2012, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez hit home runs and the Bombers downed the Detroit Tigers, 5-1, to finish a nine-game road trip with six wins.

The same can be applied to the first two months of the season. The Yankees are hitting an anemic .218 with runners in scoring position, but they are just 1-1/2 games behind the AL East-leading Rays with three games coming up against Tampa Bay beginning Tuesday night at the Stadium.

Anemic numbers or not, the Yanks are 8-3 over their last 11 and were 5-1/2 games out of first place before that stretch.

They are the hottest team in a division where all five teams are at least two games above .500 and within three games of one another.

“I know what the numbers say, but I don’t think I am having bad at-bats,” said second baseman Robinson Cano, whose .140 batting average with runners in scoring position has become the symbol of their struggles . “Every person goes through stretches like this. It will end. I can’t think about it. I have to concentrate on the at-bat I am in.”

“(Cano’s) personality is loosey-goosey and real relaxed,” hitting coach Kevin Long said. “He probably feels like ‘I have to be the guy who picks up these runs.’ He hits in the middle of our order. We have to keep him relaxed. The more relaxed, the better he hits. . . . He’s trying a little too hard. It’s human nature.”

Games like the three coming up have a more-pronounced impact because of the bunched-up standings.

“You can’t afford to get too far down,” first baseman Mark Teixeira said. “There are years where you might be five down, but there’s only one team in front of you. This year every team has a winning record. You get too far down. You could have four teams to jump over.”

“Every year (our division) is tough and it seems like this year it’s the toughest,” third baseman Alex Rodriguez said. “This division has unbelievable parity and it just keeps getting better.”

Situational hitting aside, the Yankees have a lot of things going for them right now. They lead the AL in home runs (80) and are second in on-base percentage (.338). The last time through, the starting rotation got at least 6.2 innings out of each pitcher and threw to an aggregate 3.92 ERA. Rafael Soriano has been an effective closer with Mariano Rivera out for the season and David Robertson out with injuries, going 6-for-6 in save opportunities and has not allowing a run since they went down.

Still the situational hitting looms. In a 4-3 loss to Detroit on Saturday, the Yanks tied the score in the ninth without a hit when Teixeira drew a bases-loaded walk off Jose Valverde. They did, however, fail to get in the go-ahead run.

“There’s been a lot of grinding at-bats, things we need to do, things that have been part of our DNA for a long time,” Rodriguez said. “You’re not always going to get a big hit, but the one thing we can do is grind out at-bats . . . and make the pitchers work.”

“If we get some of these hits, we’re going to score 9-10 runs a game,” Long said. “I know it’s going to turn.”

Brett Gardner (elbow strain) will play five innings in an extended spring training game Tuesday and should follow with a minor league rehab assignment. He could rejoin the team to face the Mets Sunday or the Braves in Atlanta Monday.

The New York Mets shuffled their rotation to have Johan Santanatake the mound on June 8 at Yankee Stadium for the opening game of their Subway Series tilt against the New York Yankees.

The Yankees haven't yet announced their starter for the game.

Santana threw a career-high 134 pitches on June 1 to earn the Mets' first no-hitter in franchise history, which made the two days of extra rest a necessary precaution.

Santana, who is coming off a missed season that included rehab from surgery on his left shoulder, reportedly didn't mind some extra rest, but he also didn't want to skip a start.

After all the decisions were finalized, Santana ultimately ends up pitching in the hostile territory of the Bronx, home of the New York Yankees.

When Santana takes the mound for the first time since notching a no-hitter, will New York Yankees fans show him some respect and give him a standing ovation?

It would be a classy gesture by Yankees fans, but I don't see it happening.

Since there is a designated hitter in American League ballparks, Santana won't come up to bat that game.

That means he would have to get cheered while walking out to the mound, and the applause likely wouldn't be as unanimous at that time since he's not batting.

New York Yankees fans appreciate great moments in New York sports history, but you have to earn their respect before they shower you with applause.

Earlier this season, Tim Tebow, quarterback of the New York Jets, was booed before he even took a snap in New York.

There will certainly be plenty of New York Mets fans on hand for the game who will give Santana the standing ovation he deserves.

However, New York Yankees fans are likely to stay in their seats and focus on the game at hand, not worrying about what Santana did for the Mets on June 1.

Arguments for and Against New York Yankee Shortstop Derek Jeter Winning the 2012 Batting Title: A Fan's Take

Derek Jeter currently sits in third place as far as his batting average goes in the American League, meaning the possibility exists that he could win a batting title. If he does, it would be the first of his distinguished career.

Arguments for and against this transpiring exist, with the logic on both sides of the debate solid.

1. Age

Among the most compelling logic against Jeter collecting his first batting crown is his age, as he will turn 38 years old on June 26. The demand on his body of playing shortstop and batting leadoff for the Yankees could be too much, causing him to wear down as the summer progresses. His averages the past two seasons were both below .300. However, the two players now ahead of Jeter, Paul Konerko of the White Sox and Josh Hamilton of the Rangers, are both over 30. Konerko, leading the AL with his .366 average, is 36.

2. Past Performance

Jeter has a history of hitting well over .300, as evidenced by his lifetime average of .313. Konerko has never hit higher than .313, while Hamilton has a batting title on his resume, hitting .359 in 2010. Mark Trumbo of the Angels, now in fourth at .324, has too small a sample to really know what he is capable of doing. Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder of the Tigers are hitting .318 and .319, respectively, with Cabrera the reigning batting champion. In his previous seven campaigns, Fielder has never hit over .300.

3. Speed

Jeter definitely has one thing in his favor -- his speed and hustle. This could and does translate into infield hits, meaning he does not have to make great contact to muster a base hit. Jeter hits the ball on the ground the vast majority of the time, enabling the New York shortstop to use his quickness to garner cheap hits. This is not the strong suit of players such as Konerko, Hamilton, Cabrera or Fielder; they are all middle of the batting order sluggers paid to drive in runs with their power.

4. X Factors

Hamilton is the logical choice to win the batting crown, which more than likely would give him the Triple Crown, since he has huge leads in both home runs and runs batted in. But there has not been a Triple Crown winner since 1967, so the pressure on Hamilton would increase as the season wore on. Hamilton has to stay healthy to get enough at-bats to qualify for a title, something which has been difficult for him in the past, as he has played in more than 133 games just once in his six years. Jeter does not walk a lot, meaning he will have more official at-bats, which then means he will need more hits to keep his average up. Hamilton plays in a great hitters' park in Texas, while Fielder and Cabrera bat half the time in spacious Comerica Park in Detroit, with plenty of room for hits to fall in.

U.S. Cellular officially announces the Samsung Galaxy S III, Available in July with pre-orders starting June 12th

U.S. Cellular is the third major carrier to officially announce the Samsung Galaxy S III. If you want their version, you will have to wait a little longer because it won’t be available till July. No specific date was offered, but pre-orders start on June 12. They didn’t offer any pricing either, but did say it will be available on June 12. It will most likely be inline with others, $199 for 16GB and $249 for 32GB.
Interestingly enough their presser refers to the blue version as Pebble Blue while T-Mobile and Sprint refer to it as Metallic Blue, which we believe will be the actual color. The 16GB version will be available in both the Marble White and Pebble Blue (I mean Metallic Blue) and the 32GB version will only be available in Ceramic White.
U.S. Cellular’s version will be 4G LTE capable and will have the same specs as the other U.S. counterparts.

ASUS reveals ‘Next Transformation’ as the Transformer AiO, a dual-booting Windows 8 / Android 4.0 desktop PC

Last week when ASUS teased us with their Next Transformation we kind of knew that it was a dual-booting Windows 8 / Android device. Earlier they announced their partnership with BlueStacks, and I was hopeful that wasn’t the tease. Thankfully it wasn’t as they just revealed the Transformer AiO at Computex.
It’s an all-in-one desktop PC that features an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, a discrete graphics card, and an 18.4-inch multitouch display for Microsoft Windows 8. Nothing extraordinary there, but here’s where things get interesting. If you lift the screen out of its base, it becomes a behemoth tablet. Okay what else? While in tablet mode you will be able to switch to Android 4.0. It can also be used as a Windows 8 device in tablet mode by communicating with the dock by some sort of remote desktop.
As of right now, we don’t know much more as far as any other specs or pricing. I’m sure it won’t be cheap though. The folks over at The Verge are at Computex and they grabbed a quick hands on. Hit the break to check it out.

NVIDIA Gives More Details Of Its Upcoming KAI For Budget-Friendly Tablets

It’s no secret that NVIDIA (and Android fanatics in general) are eager and excited about its upcoming KAI platform for tablets. We saw as recently as a few weeks ago how NVIDIA envisioned bringing premium quality to tablets for modest and reasonable prices, yet NVIDIA was rather vague and general about the concept and its intentions for Android consumers. That’s why it took the time to expand on the basic premise of what KAI is and why it will be important for any and all Android users. To begin, NVIDIA makes it completely clear that it’s not easy to bring a budget tablet device to the marketplace:

“The truth is, it’s incredibly difficult to manufacture a low-cost tablet at all, even with a compromised experience – one marked by poor performance, previous-gen display capabilities, mediocre battery life, discouraging touchscreen responsiveness, lack of apps, and low-quality build. Building one that’s satisfying and profitable is a whole other matter”.

That very reason is the basis of the KAI platform. NVIDIA got to thinking and wondered if it’s possible to bring its high-performing Tegra 3 chip, while keeping costs as low as possible for tablet devices. Well NVIDIA researchers found a way to bring its Tegra 3 technology for budget friendly tablets. In essence, the Tegra 3 is the ”blueprint providing the basis for future low-cost tablets with a premium experience that consumers will be able to buy” for KAI-based budget tablets. That means that eventually, users will be able to use the Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor (and its 4-PLUS-1 architecture and battery-saver core) in a variety of options and configurations such as NVIDIA’s own reference unit— which is a modest 7-inch tablet. NVIDIA also confirms that KAI technology will be found in many resolutions and sizes of Android tablets.
NVIDIA doesn’t have much more for the Android community for now, but urges everyone to “stay tuned” to see what it and partner manufacturers are cooking up their sleeves. Looks like it will soon be time to finally splurge on a budget-friendly tablet device, right?

More Details On Microsoft’s SmartGlass, Still Strongly Aims To Be The Ultimate Media Hub In The Living Room

Why in the heck are we reporting news on Microsoft? Good question. As we briefly touched upon a couple of days ago, in an attempt to integrate seamlessly several media outlets through the medium of one device, your Xbox 360, Microsoft has brought to the table “SmartGlass”. What is SmartGlass? It’s quite a few services, features and benefits rolled up into one package. For starters, it can be considered an application. An app that allows your phone and tablet to be transformed into another screen, an extension if you will, for your television as well as a game controller and Internet access tool. The feature will work with iOS, Android and of course, Windows, giving great flexibility and squashing for the most the necessity to go out and purchase a new device for compatibility. Using your 360 console, your tablet, phone and even PC becomes a multi-screen companion for your convenience and at your fingertips. For example, the company demo’d Game of Throneson the TV via the Xbox, a SmartGlass enabled tab was showing a map of Westeros and other pertinent info related to the show. In addition, the content itself can either be pushed from the PC, phone or tab to the Xbox or from the Xbox to the TV set. SmartGlass seamlessly integrates all devices to work together to enhance the media experience. It will be the hub that powers all, so to speak. Only time will tell how the product ultimately pans out and whether or not Android devices will integrate into the mix with little effort. MADFINGER Games announces Dead Trigger, A zombie-themed first person shooter [Video]

MADFINGER Games, makers of the very popular Shadowgun, just announced their upcoming title called Dead Trigger. It’s a first person shooter and zombies are involved so we’re already excited. The storyline is that the world has collapsed due to a strange infection that turns regular people into zombies. You guessed it, you need to take the zombies down with your collection of weapons.
Dead Trigger will be compatible with many devices, but they will release a NVIDIA Tegra 3 version which promises to be console quality. It also supports game controllers so you can connect your device via HDMI to your big screen and play it like it was an Xbox 360 or a PS3. MADFINGER games was able to maximize what the Tegra 3 offers by adding ragdoll physics, volumetric fog, specular lighting, and enhanced fluid and water. You won’t find anything like this in the standard version.
