Update on Jeter
NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter took batting
practice on the field Tuesday for the
first time since going on the disabled
list with a right calf strain on Aug. 3. He
also took ground balls at shortstop and
tested his calf with some light running
on the field.
It's a sign of progress for the Yankees'
shortstop, who took tee and toss for
the first time on Monday. He said he'll
probably do similar programs on
Wednesday and Thursday before flying
to Tampa, Fla., to continue his rehab while the
Yankees are on the road.
"It's a day-to-day thing," Jeter said. "They told
me I'm taking BP, so I'm taking BP. Tomorrow,
I don't know. I know I'm going to Tampa on
Thursday. That's all I know."
Jeter is 10 days into his third DL stint this
season. He missed the first three months of the
season while recovering from a broken left
ankle, returned to play one game on July 11 and
went on the DL again after suffering a right
quad strain in that game. He joined the club
again on July 28, but he was only able to play
four games before going back on the DL.
Jeter -- who is batting .211 with a home run and
two RBIs -- said he wasn't sure if he would be
able to return to the Yankees when eligible on
Sunday. He also doesn't know whether he'll
have to play rehab games in the Minors before
he returns.
"I always think I can just jump back in. I did last
time," Jeter said. "If they want me to go play
somewhere, I'll go play somewhere. It's entirely
up to them. I'm not really in a power position to
negotiate. That's all I can say."
Granderson focused on finding timing at plate
NEW YORK -- Curtis Granderson can't
mirror the time he missed during Spring
Training and the first four months of the
regular season, so he knows it's going
to take a while for him to get his timing
back at the plate.
But if Monday night is any indication,
he's close. The outfielder's seventh-
inning home run against the Angels
proved to be the decisive run in the
Yankees' 2-1 victory.
"My timing is the main thing right now,"
Granderson said. "I just got to continue to work
with different things -- deliveries to the plate,
just realizing the rhythm the pitchers are getting
into. It's just something that happens over
time."
A broken arm suffered in Spring Training and a
broken pinkie sustained in May have kept
Granderson out of all but 18 games this season,
perhaps contributing to his struggles at the
plate.
Granderson has just 14 hits in 59 at-bats
entering Tuesday and has struggled since
coming off the disabled list for the second time
on Aug. 2, batting just .226 with two home runs
and four RBIs over 10 games.
Monday's home run was his third of the season,
and it came against a pitcher -- Angels starter
Garrett Richards -- whom Granderson is now 4-
for-6 against with three home runs in his career.
"I think as a hitter, he knows when he's starting
to get right. It's a feeling you feel when you're
seeing the ball better," manager Joe Girardi
said. "Curtis was able to hit that home run --
it's a feeling that a hitter gets, and you can't
always notice it."
The free agent to be said he has been taking
extra swings with hitting coach Kevin Long and
will continue to do so until he feels like he gets
his timing back.
"You only can control what you can, and I
understand that there aren't many games left,"
Granderson said. "But I can get out there and
hit a little more. I can get in the batting cage,
go out on the field a little early both at home
and on the road, and that's what Kevin Long
and myself have been continuing to do."
Girardi gives Gardner, Ichiro, Stewart a rest
NEW YORK -- Yankees manager Joe
Girardi shuffled his lineup Tuesday with
the hopes of fulfilling multiple purposes.
It was a chance to sit some left-handed
hitters against Angels lefty Jason
Vargas, but it also served as a way to
rest players the Yankees have been
running out on the field on almost an
everyday basis.
"Just using everyone," Girardi said,
"keeping everyone strong and fresh."
Girardi slotted shortstop Eduardo Nunez in the
leadoff spot for the first time this season, which
gave usual center fielder Brett Gardner a
breather. Gardner had played in 115 of the
team's 117 games entering Tuesday night.
"He's been playing every day, but I've noticed
in the second half when I've given him a day off
how much more explosive he's been," Girardi
said. "He seemed to swing better. I think that's
important. We ran him really hard the first half,
and I think it took its toll a little bit."
Vernon Wells started in right field on Tuesday in
place of the left-handed-hitting Ichiro Suzuki.
Girardi also held catcher Chris Stewart out of
the lineup to give him a rest and started Austin
Romine. Stewart has played in a career-high 80
games this season, 13 more than he played in
while with San Francisco in 2011.
Stewart was hit on the hand with a backswing
during Monday night's 2-1 win over the Angels,
but Girardi said Stewart's fine.
Romine has also been hot at the plate. In his
last 11 games going back to July 11, Romine
was 11-for-31 (.355) with four doubles, a home
run and four RBIs.
"We think he's made some really big
improvements in his time here," Girardi said.
"We're happy with the way he's playing. I don't
feel like I need to run Stew into the ground. I
can keep them both involved and active. A lot
of times when you do that, you can get more
productivity."
Girardi said Romine will likely see some more
playing time, but Stewart will still catch "a lot."

Astronauts used to have it really bad when it came to orbital dining options. Freeze-dried powders and cube food made for pretty depressing fare.
Now they have everything from fresh fruit to scrambled eggs. But what they really need is this 12-course meal in a can.
British design student Christopher Godfrey doesn't seem to have been thinking of spacefaring diners when he conceived All in One, a layered gourmet feast in a can. Doubtless the container would be unsuitable for space, but think of the gross-out fun you could have with this in zero-g.
Indeed, his description of this head-scratcher, apparently inspired by Andy Warhol, suggests it's all about earthbound waste, not heavenly vittles.

Major League Baseball has agreed to 50-game suspensions with 12 players for their roles in the Biogenesis case, FoxSports.com reported Monday.
Alex Rodriguez was expected to be served with the harshest penalty, and an announcement was expected later Monday.
The players confirmed by FoxSports.com to have agreed to the suspensions without the right to appeal are: heir roles in the Biogenesis case.

HOUSTON — Kroger Co. this week
introduced lower everyday prices on
thousands of items at its stores in the
Houston market and said it would invest $79
million to upgrade stores in the region this
year.
Kroger’s “refresh” initiative in Houston also
includes a renewed emphasis on the
shopping experience, including faster
checkouts, fuel discounts, local products and
community relations. As in other markets,
the lower everyday prices coincide with a
discontinuation of double-couponing. The
lower everyday prices began Wednesday.
"We're a
strong
brand
and
company
but
we've
achieved
that
status because we're always looking for
improvement opportunities. Kroger currently
serves 820,000 households every week in the
Houston area with 107 locations but we're
eager to expand those numbers," Bill Breetz,
president of the Kroger Southwest Division,
said in a statement. "We know that price is
important to every customer, and at times,
can be a deciding factor where to shop. With
our Refresh initiative, we're making a multi-
million dollar investment to reduce prices
across the store and reengaging our
employees to offer highly-satisfied customer
service."
Kroger is investing $79 million in the
Houston region this year to upgrade 18
existing store locations and three fuel center
sites, and to open four fuel centers and a
new Kroger Marketplace store. That location,
in Kingwood, Texas, is expected to open in
the third quarter.

suspension deal
Without agreement, Yankees third baseman
may be facing lifetime ban from baseball

The legal team representing Alex Rodriguez has
begun negotiating a settlement it hopes will help
the Yankees third baseman avoid a lifetime ban
from baseball, multiple media outlets reported
on Wednesday.
The talks are occurring despite Rodriguez's
consistent denials of any connection to the
Biogenesis clinic and his representative's
insistence that an agreement would not be
considered.
According to the reports by the New York Daily
News, New York Post and ESPN, Major League
Baseball earlier this week informed the MLB
Players Association that A-Rod's penalty would
be "considerable" and could even end his
playing career if he decides to fight what is said
to be extensive evidence that he not only
acquired performance-enhancing substances
from Biogenesis but that he recruited other
players to patronize the clinic and impeded
MLB's investigation.
There has been speculation that MLB wants the
38-year-old to sit out at least a full season in
exchange for not imposing harsher punishment.
There is a powerful financial incentive for
Rodriguez to settle. If Rodriguez goes along
with missing the rest of this season and all of
2014, he would still be entitled to the $61
million he is owed for the 2015, '16 and '17
seasons. He would not receive any of that
money if he is banned for life and his appeal is
denied.
There have been multiple reports that eight or
nine other players will receive 50-game
suspensions in return for agreeing not to file
grievances and appeal their punishments, thus
effectively ending their seasons. That group
could include Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta,
Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Yankees
catcher Francisco Cervelli and Padres shortstop
Everth Cabrera.
Brewers star Ryan Braun accepted a 65-game
suspension last week. If there are any appeals,
MLB would present that as evidence to support
the credibility of Biogenesis founder Anthony
Bosch, who agreed to cooperate with baseball's
investigators.
Major League Baseball had no comment on the
reports.
A player who accepts an immediate suspension
would be technically eligible for the postseason
if his team makes it. As a practical matter,
though, it would be nearly impossible for a
player to be sharp enough to contribute at that
point.
When Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was
suspended last year, he could have been
activated in time for the National League
Championship Series, but the Giants decided
against the move. Manager Bruce Bochy
explained at the time that he liked the way his
roster had pulled together down the stretch.
Rodriguez, who is currently rehabbing following
offseason hip surgery and a recent quadriceps
injury, has retained the services of the
Manhattan law firm of Cohen, Weiss and Simon,
according to the Post. If an agreement isn't
reached, Commissioner Bud Selig has some
options on what the next step would be.
If Rodriguez's suspension is based on the
collective bargaining agreement, he would not
be able to play while waiting for arbitrator
Frederic Horowitz to hear his case. While it's
unclear how quickly an appeal could be heard,
Horowitz conceivably could hand down his
ruling before the end of the season.
If Rodriguez is suspended for violating the Joint
Drug Agreement, he could play through the
appeals process. Or, if he's suspended under
the Commissioner's "integrity of the game"
powers in the Collective Bargaining Agreement,
Selig himself would hear the appeal instead of
Horowitz. But that's considered the least likely
outcome.
Rodriguez has never tested positive for PEDs in
non-survey testing, though he did test positive
in 2003 survey testing, which could help his
case in any appeal. But if it comes to that,
Horowitz will have the latitude to consider a
lifetime suspension and perhaps impose a lesser
penalty.
An announcement is expected any day. Reports
have suggested it will come on Friday, with the
Post saying it could be made as early as
Thursday. Players who choose to sit out 50
games now will have to begin serving their
suspensions soon in order to complete their
sentences by the end of the regular season.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman
declined to speculate on the future during a
conference call with reporters on Wednesday.
He referred all questions to MLB, adding that
the team will continue to assume Rodriguez will
return to active duty until told differently.
"I think you have to at this point," he said.
"Nothing's been handed down, so I think you
have to. We expected to have him back at this
point. We don't have him yet, but I know he's
playing in a simulated game [Thursday], and
that's a step in the right direction."
