I had to write an original 300-600 word Red Sox article on the spot for an application. So this is what I wrote. If I post it here is it no longer original?
I’m my years of sporting events, shows, strip clubs, and jr high school talent shows I don’t think I’ve ever booed anyone besides a rival team. As a fan, I support my team win or lose. With that said, I know that fans pay for the right to voice their opinions.
That brings me to Bobby Valentine. I admit he’d made some bad moves. They started with leaving Bard in for the longest outing of his career to blow the lead and most recently he set the lineup mistaking which arm the opposing pitcher threw with.
Maybe we were spoiled because Francona had leeway. Maybe Francona just knew his players better. But as much as I hate it, I’m almost going to defend Valentine. Although I’m not a fan of him, I think it’s too early to get on Bobby V. Maybe he’s cost the Sox a couple games but the fault that falls on him overall is pretty small.
With over $60M on the DL what’s a boy to do? Looking at the starting outfield lately, they’re starting backups. The starting outfield was intended to be Crawford, Ellsbury, and a platoon between Ross and Sweeney. Now Both Ross and Sweeney are starting every game and McDonald and newly acquired Marlon Byrd are relied on.
I’m actually surprised with how well Aviles has played, maybe the dust up with Valentine in spring training helped motivate him. Let’s not forget the Youkilis non-sense. There was much ado about Booby calling Youk out in public. Maybe it’s coincidence, but Youklis has turned it around since that scuffle.
I’m not saying not to question the moves by Valentine but let’s give him the opportunity to drown himself before we throw him in the water.
