Hershey Begins GPS Mapping of Ghanaian Cocoa Farms

The Hershey Co. is employing GPS mapping to provide precise measurements of farm acreage as part of the “Hershey Learn to Grow” Farm Program in the African nation of Ghana. The cutting-edge technology will help farmers better plan and manage their farms, thereby boosting yields and farmer incomes.
Learn to Grow rolled out Jan. 30 as part of Hershey’s $10 million commitment in west Africa over the next five years to accelerate the chocolate maker’s cocoa programs in the region. The investment will help enhance cocoa farming and community health, and reduce instances of child labor.
Additionally, Pennsylvania-based Hershey has selected the Assin Foso District in the heart of Ghana’s central cocoa region as the site for the innovative Learn to Grow farm and community learning center. From this location, the program will help more than 1,000 farm families and 5,000 cocoa community members improve their livelihoods by instructing them in the latest modern farming techniques and agricultural stewardship, including appropriate and inappropriate uses of labor.
Further, Hershey and partner Source Trust, a London-based not-for-profit organization, will establish 25 community-based farmer organizations to raise the living standards of 1,250 cocoa farm families. Through good agricultural, environmental, social and business practices training; access to improved planting material; and financing for farm inputs, the aim is to double productivity yield and farm income over four years. The local organizations will be the bases of the new farmer and family development that Hershey and Source Trust are implementing in rural Ghana.
Along with GPS farm-mapping initiative, Hershey and Source Trust are surveying participating farmers to better understand current farm characteristics, farming practices, and pest and disease issues. This information will be used to establish a baseline from which to begin to help the farmers adopt the best new practices and processes for making their farms more productive, diverse and successful. The survey also will look at key indicators for household risk of inappropriate forms of child labor, with the goal of reducing its worst forms.
Additionally, the farm center will supply farmers with high-yielding seedlings, better planting and pruning practices, and methods for organic fertilization and biocontrol of insect pests to improve yields and incomes, as well as bringing high-tech learning to rural farm villages through technology centers offering computer access to local schools, farmers and the community. The training programs will feature an interactive curriculum to teach cocoa farmers about optimal agricultural, environmental and social practices.
Last year, Hershey introduced mobile phone technology for cocoa farmers through its “CocoaLink” program.

’30 Rock’ Satire of Kraft Sponsorship Is Sponsored by Kraft

The episode of the sitcom “30 Rock” that NBC broadcast live on Thursday night offered a fanciful tribute to live TV on the Peacock network. Not left out of that wacky history lesson were the sponsors, an integral part of television when it was live.
The episode began with an imaginary, black-and-white NBC sitcom called “The Lovebirds,” modeled on the legendary CBS sitcom “The Honeymooners.” The writers of “30 Rock” made “The Lovebirds” part of what an announcer called “The Kraft Product Placement Comedy Hour, sponsored by Kraft Singles. It’s the cheese that won World War II.”
The bit was appropriate because Kraft was a major sponsor during the early days of NBC TV, producing shows like “Kraft Music Hall” and “Kraft Television Theater.” Marketers and their agencies owned the shows back then, so the sponsors’ names appeared in the title.
But the bit also worked because it was part of a current branded integration — the 21st-century term for a deal that extends beyond product placement and incorporates a brand like Kraft into the plot of a show.
The deal was struck with NBCUniversal by the LiquidThread and Starcom MediaVest Group divisions of the Publicis Groupe, acting on behalf of Kraft Foods. (LiquidThread is the unit of Starcom MediaVest devoted to branded content.)
Kraft already had a 30-second commercial scheduled for the episode of “30 Rock,” said Angela Wiggins, a spokeswoman for Kraft Foods. After NBC decided to broadcast the episode live, Kraft was offered “the opportunity for a branded integration,” she added.
As part of the deal, there was also an actual commercial for Kraft Singles, part of a new campaign for various Kraft cheese products that carries the theme “Make something amazing.”
“With the long-standing history of Kraft and branded entertainment, this was an intriguing opportunity for us to pay homage to the brand’s history in a new and engaging way,” said Brent Poer, executive vice president and executive creative director at LiquidThread North America.
The episode also included a wink at sponsorships in the days of live TV that was not part of a branded integration.
At one point in the show, the actor Chris Parnell, reprising the character of a shady doctor that he plays from time to time on “30 Rock,” urged pregnant women to smoke an imaginary cigarette brand called Chattertons. (The name was sort of a cross between a real brand, Chesterfield, and the actress Ruth Chatterton.)
Mr. Parnell returned later to deliver a corrective commercial, urging women who smoked Chattertons while pregnant to seek compensation if they suffered from “Chatterton syndrome.”
In addition to spoofing “The Honeymooners,” the live episode of “30 Rock” also parodied another CBS sitcom, “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” as well as two series that actually appeared on NBC, “Laugh-In” and “The Dean Martin Show.”

Albertsons LLC creates social and digital marketing team

BOISE, Idaho — Albertsons LLC is sharpening its focus on social media and digital marketing with the creation of a new social and digital marketing team that will be led by technology and social marketing expert Karl Meinhardt.
Meinhardt’s history in the technology side of grocery retail extends back to the first launch of Albertsons.com in 1998, where he was responsible for developing a first-ever Fortune 50 grocery e-commerce solution for Albertsons Inc. Meinhardt went on to found several startup companies in the foodservice and social gaming markets after leaving that role.

“As a founder of several start-up companies, Karl has a comprehensive understanding of information as a powerful source of service,” said Mike Massimino, Albertsons LLC’s VP center store. “Karl's expertise of turning knowledge into a strategic advantage has assisted many organizations in their long term product and service goals, and his efforts to date with our social media endeavors have already established a firm foundation on which the rest of our social and digital marketing strategies will be built.”

The social and digital marketing team includes Jana Jeffery, digital community manager, with more than 18 years of experience as a marketing and technology professional for Fortune 100 companies and several emerging startups, and Elizabeth Perryman, digital content manager, who brings experience in public and media relations, having worked with companies throughout the Northwest. Combined, they bring 26 years of social, digital and marketing experience to the newly created team. They join Dan Mackay, director of web services, to form the company’s digital marketing team.

“Every company knows that they ‘should’ be using social channels to connect with customers, but only those with an acute understanding of their customer, and how to relate to and connect with those customers will be successful in engaging those customers in the social conversation,” Meinhardt said. “It’s an exciting segment of grocery retail marketing because the space is constantly evolving. Awareness, agility, and brand personality are the key factors of success in the ever-changing digital/social frontier. This team has the skill to deliver those and more.”

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australian billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer has unveiled plans to build the Titanic II.

Palmer said his new company Blue Star Line Pty Ltd had commissioned the state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build a near replica of the ill-fated Titanic in China. The cost is unknown.

The ship’s maiden voyage from England to North America is scheduled for late 2016.

Attended 75 Consecutive Reds' Opening Days
When Paul Minnick headed to Crosley Field on April 14, 1936, he watched his  Cincinnati Reds lose 8-6 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the lineup that day were future Hall of Famers Ernie Lombardi, Kiki Cuyler, Paul Waner, and Arky Vaughan.
He would then be in the stands at Crosley, then Riverfront Stadium, and finally, The Great American Ballpark for every Reds’ home opener for the next 75 years. His final Opening Day was in 2011 when his Reds defeated the Brewers, 8-6. (He was too ill to attend the 2012 opener.)
Paul Minnick died at the age of 93.

Twitter for Android gets another minor update

Twitter for Android has a small update in the Google Play store this evening, bringing it to version 3.2.1. The change log is short -- crashes for users that use the app in Dutch, Finnish, and Hungarian have been fixed, and the Indonesian language has been added. Grab the update from the Google Play store or hit the link after the break.

Meon makes its way to Android!

Those of you old enough to remember Windows Mobile no doubt played Meon at some point. The idea's simple enough — you use light to free the cute little Meons from whatever it is that's keeping them trapped. The game starts out simple, but pretty soon you'll be bouncing light off mirrors and changing colors with prisms to the point that you're not sure what started where, or where it's going to end up. It's strangely addicting. The Android version is faithful to the original. Our only real complaint is that it doesn't really take advantage of the larger screen sizes. Meon Lite gives you access to the first 32 levels, though chances are if you're anything like us, you'll spring 99 cents to get all 120 levels in the full version. We've got download links after the break. Download: Meon Lite (free), Meon full (99 cents)
